As a project in one of my college literacy courses, I wrote a unit plan for the book, The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Since I did not have an opportunity to teach it, as a result of school closure due to the Coronavirus, I wanted to share the materials I created with fellow teachers. The unit is a 15 day/3 week plan for a 5th grade classroom. On this page, I have also included some online materials to complete this unit in a distance learning format. I hope that you will find this unit enjoyable to teach and that your students will enjoy the planned activities and content throughout!

Here is the unit plan, student packets, and theme chart I created for The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I would love to hear your feedback on the materials and any changes you made to them to meet your students' individual needs, as this will help me to reflect on the unit!

Online Materials
To grow the students' vocabulary over the course of the unit, I planned on using a knitting basket idea to collect words students thought were characteristic of the time period. You can read the full extent of the idea in my unit plan document, but here is an online resource I created to reflect what I would have done in the classroom.

To further develop the students' writing skills and help the students identify with the character, they will be writing a diary from the perspective of Kit, the main character. This link gives instructions and an example for the students to get an idea of the online format of a diary.
|
Lastly, students will be using padlet as the online format for the final project. Padlet will create the feel of looking into an actual trunk. Students can upload or draw images of the objects they would like to include, and they can type up their write-ups in the padlet as well. These videos are an example of what I would send to my students as a tutorial on how to use padlet to create their project.
