As a teacher, it is important to keep up-to-date records of both instructional and non-instructional events that take place during class time. These records should include whether or not students have completed their work, how the students are progressing in the class, and random things such as permission slips. Keeping records allows teachers to stay informed on what is happening in their classroom. This also helps teachers to keep parents informed in case something was forgotten. Records can either be kept online or written down. However you prefer, remember to keep the records organized and neat.

The elements that compose component 4a are...
- Student completion of assignments: Teachers need to document what students completed which assignments and how well each of the students did on the assignment.
- Student progress in learning: Keep track of how well your students are understanding the material. Each student learns at a different pace, so we must stay on top of where each student is.
- Non-instructional records: This category involves everything that happens in the classroom that does not involve learning. This includes students behavior, permission slips, and events involving money.
