The main way that teachers can influence their students' learning is through the use of resources. Students need resources to increase their knowledge. Resources fall into four different categories. They are those used on a regular basis in the classroom, those that are used outside of the classroom, those that teachers use to increase their knowledge on subjects and teaching skills, and those that students use during non-instructional periods. Teachers must be wise in choosing resources for their students. The resources need to include an equal amount of challenging and simpler work. It takes time for teachers to have the capability to choose resources that bring topics to life for their students, but the sooner a teacher learns, the better. This will allow students to greatly increase their knowledge on a wide variety of subjects.
The first element in this component is resources for classroom use. These type of resources include textbooks/curriculum, computers, articles and other tools that are used around the classroom. Teachers must choose curriculum that teaches what the students need to know for their tests and standardized tests. Choosing the correct teaching resources helps to ensure that the students will be more likely to succeed.
The second element is resources to extend content knowledge and pedagogy. This aspect is for increasing the knowledge of the teacher. It is important that as a teacher, you are always searching for new teaching techniques and new research in your field. By using resources to strengthen your teaching skills, you will allow your students to learn more from you, as well.
The third element is materials for students. These materials that you choose for your students must be challenging. If teachers just choose easy curriculum, they are not allowing their students to reach their greatest potential. Pick materials that will stretch your students minds and help them grow.
Implementing this component is rather simple. Use all of the resources that your school district offers you is key. Take advantage of the books and resources that they provide you for your students. Take students on field trips that will provide them with greater outside information than what is just being taught in the classroom. Students learn best from experiences, so take them out and let them experience what they are learning. Provide your students with opportunities to hear guest speakers and visit museums. As a teacher, make sure you are, also, increasing your knowledge. Go to teaching conferences and meet with other teachers, so that you can expand your teaching skills. By doing these few things, your students will learn more about the subjects and be more prepared to succeed.
