I have written an original math story called "A Piece of Cupcake...Or So They Say" to help second-grade students deepen their level of math understanding. The story is about a young porcupine named Polly who is tasked with taking cupcakes to school for a party. As the story progresses, Polly loses all the cupcakes and must figure out how to handle the unfolding situation. Creating math stories or other works for your students help them to better engage in the content that they are learning. This is why writing your own math story goes along with the Component 3c of the Danielson Framework which is on engaging students in learning. It is important to make concepts relatable and pull from students' real life experiences in order to engage them in the material. Using a math story that is catered to the specific content that they are learning helps to make learning fun and engaging for students.
The PA Standard that the math story targets for second grade is CC.2.2.2.A.2 - use mental strategies to add and subtract within 20. The story has the students subtracting numbers starting at eight and all the way down to zero. The students are tasked with answering the math questions that are presented in the book. The students practice using mental math throughout the book as well.
