Look around a classroom. Each of the students sitting there are different from each other. This is based on a variety of different reasons. One of the reasons is gender. Different genders mature at different times and rates which can effect the learning environment in a classroom. Race and cultural background, also, makes students different from each other. Each child in your classroom will have grown up in a different type of home environment. Each child will have different values and different abilities, whether that be sports or smart or artistic ability. It is important, as a teacher, to identify these differences and use these experiences to grow the student, not to hold them back. Children learn in different ways and at different times. As a teacher, it is beneficial to recognize these differences and the needs of your students so that you can teach them in the way that will benefit them the most. The sooner a teacher identifies each of their students different needs, the sooner more beneficial learning can be accomplished.

There are 5 main components in this section. They are...
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development: Each one of your students will develop at a different rate from each other. This should be expected of children, but teachers must take this into account when making lesson plans.
- Knowledge of the learning process: Learning requires students to be actively engaged and participating in classroom activity and discussion. They need to be using their little brains at all times.
- Knowledge of students' skills, knowledge, and language proficiency: Your students' lives don't just happen in the classroom. They have a life outside the classroom that includes sports, friends, parents, sibling, etc. Their life outside of the classroom influences their life inside the classroom.
- Knowledge of students' interest and cultural heritage: Each student has a different background. Whether that is based on different cultures or home lives, it affects the students' learning inside of the classroom.
- Knowledge of students' special needs: Some students in your classroom may have special needs, which means that they do not develop at the same rate as the other students. Some of these special needs could range from dyslexia to ADHD to hearing impairments. Whatever the need, it is important that all of your students' needs are met in a specific fashion.
