Teachers communicate with students for a couple different reasons. The first reason is to show their students that learning is a necessary activity. Students must learn in order to succeed in life. The second reason is to communicate, with clear directions, what activities they will be working on. When teaching, it is important to communicate with accuracy, clarity, and imagination. As teachers, we must connect the lessons to topics that our students are interested in. This will help to engage them in the lesson. Teachers do not always give students all of the information, though. Sometimes teachers do not reveal all of the information so that they students can learn to think about situations on their own and create their own ideas and opinions.

The four components that make up Domain 3a are...
- Expectations for learning: It is important that the objectives of the lesson are clearly communicated to the students by the end of the lesson.
- Directions and procedures: Students must clearly understand the directions of activities. This is especially important if the teacher is not supervising the activity. Directions should be either written or spoken to the students before the activity is started.
- Explanations of content: Teachers must use vivid language when teaching. The use of analogies that connect to the students' every-day lives helps the students to connect to the lesson. Teachers must also be prepared to answer any misconceptions that the students may have.
- Use of oral or written language: For some students, the teacher's use of language is how they will begin to learn a more advanced vocabulary. As teachers, we should be using vocabulary that is at our students' level of understanding but one that will also challenge them to a certain extent. Our students will repeat us, so our words must be worthy of being repeated.
