When creating a successful classroom, there needs to be mutual respect between the teacher and students, as well as between students themselves. Respect is key in order to make children feel comfortable in the classroom. With respect comes a sense of safety that students feel when they enter school. Teachers can make the students feel safe and comfortable in the classroom by giving encouragement, showing that they care about their students, actively listening to their stories, and acting fairly in every situation. Students need their teachers to continually show that they care for and want to help them.
Teachers can create a caring, respectful environment by asking students about their lives outside of school. If you know that one of your students has a new baby sibling, ask them to bring in pictures to show the class. Ask your students about their lives and get to know them on a personal level. One way to get to know your students on a personal level is going to have lunch with them. Go and sit at their lunch table for a while and join in in their crazy, little conversations. This will show them that you truly care about their lives, and they will begin to trust you and respect you. Another way to create a positive classroom environment is by ensuring that all students are respectful to each other. If you happen to witness one child being rude to another, it is important to intervene and have them apologize. By rewarding encouraging behavior and disciplining impolite behavior, you are creating an environment where the students will want to be kind to one other. Creating a respectful environment for students allows for optimal learning to be completed while each student feels valued.
