Assessment now is no longer defined as "the test that is taken at the end of a unit." Assessment is now used during the lesson. This type of assessment is called formative assessment. Formative assessment is used to help the teacher determine whether or not the students understand the lesson. When teachers are watching their students learning, they tend to look for specific words that the students are writing on their papers or listening closely to the students' questions to decide whether or not the students understand the lesson fully. Teachers can formulate specific questions for the students that will help strengthen the students' understanding of the lesson. By using formative assessment on a regular basis, teachers will have a better idea of what their students truly know.

The elements of Domain 3d are...
- Assessment criteria: Students must be aware of the criteria of their assessments. They must understand what will be on the test and prepare accordingly.
- Monitoring of student learning: One aspect of being a master teacher is being able to gain evidence of what the students understand. It takes careful planning and use of different techniques to be able to do this.
- Feedback to students: In order for the students to understand how they are doing on a topic, the teacher must give them feedback. Feedback should be given on a regular basis, be constructive, and show students how they can improve their work.
- Student self-assessment and monitoring of progress: It is important for students to be able to assess their own learning. As teachers, we need to give students the tools they need to be able to do this.
